Barn Reared Pigs
Australian Natural Pork Barn Reared Pigs
| For more than 10 years, Australian Natural Pork - a division of Milne AgriGroup - has developed and refined a system for growing pigs in barns or ecoshelters where they are able to move about freely. As a result, they are healthier and happier and do not require the routine use of antibiotics. Breeding sows are housed in open barns and bedded on straw. They are moved to the delivery ward for the birthing of their piglets and remain in this warm sheltered environment until the piglets are old enough to be weaned. The sows are then transferred back to the open barns. The young weaners are transferred to separate “growout” barns on properties and fattened before sale. This system safeguards the welfare of the animals and contributes to a quality production system. A major expansion of pig production is underway with new facilities being constructed at Australind and Jaloran, south of Perth. Pig numbers will increase to over 30,000 baconers per annum. The separation of breeding and growout locations reduces the risk of disease. Strict biosecurity and quality assurance protocols ensure the integrity of Milne AgriGroup pig production. |
